Fabio and Joanna are from good Italian and Greek families, respectively. Being Mediterranean, family and “domani” are words that describe them perfectly. So relaxed, friendly and warm. Dori and I were simply embraced by them when we arrived to document their wedding day. Two photographers, a fantastic couple, great family and party-animal friends – this wedding was a special challenge.
Between Dori and I, we shot around 2000 photos on the day. Selecting the ones that go into the album will be a difficult task and one we look forward to. But we also know that some of the photos we shot will not make the album because they may be too avant-garde and will appeal more to us than anyone else. The photos I have selected here fall into that group. I love them, they appeal to me but they may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
While I hung out with Fabio and his friends and family, as he got ready, Dori did the same with Joanna. We both ended up shooting in a photojournalistic-style while we hung out with Fabio and Joanna – these two are natural, vibrant and beat to their own rhythm. I did manage to get Fabio to pose for a few portraits though, and here is one of him chilling on the rooftop.

As the wedding ceremony was scheduled for 5pm Fabio, Joanna and families met up at Shepstone Gardens so we could shoot those all-important family and retinue photos. We were running against the clock though as a typical Johannesburg afternoon thunderstorm was heading our way rapidly. As it turned out, we finished the shoot just as the first raindrops began to fall.
These three photos are from the time at Shepstone Gardens. Two of them are with my favourite lens – the 15mm fish eye. I love the way it bends straight lines and pull so much into the composition.

The ceremony was a little less pressurised than what had passed previously in the day and because we shoot together, each of us had time to explore various angles and lenses during the ceremony. I used the fish eye lens quite a bit but also find time to get in closer with a longer lens and shoot some of those unnoticed moments. I love these two photos because they capture moments and scenes not normally seen in wedding photographs.

At the reception, we had plenty of time to shoot creatively and explore images. This set from the reception shows off my love for movement photography, capturing a dynamic that flows…painting with light.

My final out-of-the box favourite photo from yesterday is this one of Joanna lying on a couch in the foyer of the Sandton Sun. It has a classic, 50’s film-star feel about it and it appeals.
Hope you like it too.
