Every now and then we get to do a wedding in an urban environment. It is our favourite way to shoot a wedding. There is something about an architecturally, well designed building that inspires us to see things differently.
Reflections, leading lines, strong mixed lighting, squares, oblongs, rectangles, not to mention all that glass…..
Nico and Karin’s wedding at the Hyatt last Saturday is a case in point. Set in the middle of Rosebank with its tree-lined surrounding suburbs, the Hyatt is all urban chic and modern design. The choice of many for lunches and cocktails, and favoured by Jo’burg’s power elite, the Hyatt fills with a heady sense of having “arrived”.
While Dori took photos of Karin getting ready, I met up with Nico and spent some time taking pictures of him and his best man – exploiting the leading lines, lighting, architecture and, of course, his Z4.
I had just enough time before the ceremony started to get some detail and setting shots in the garden where the wedding ceremony was to be held, before Karin made her entrance. All the while, the skies had been threatening to explode with a characteristic, afternoon summer thunderstorm. Grumbling and rumbling with flashes of lightning the storm slowly passed over, dropping a few scattered drops of warm rain on the guests as the ceremony took place. What a dramatic way to have a wedding ceremony. And as the ceremony drew to a close the skies stopped grumbling and the guests threw their confetti over Nico and Karin…..it couldn’t have been planned better.
With the ceremony over and the party to come, we had plenty of time to take our newly-wedded couple to locations we had scouted in the Hyatt, earlier in the week. We managed some great images and Nico and Karin were fantastic models – patient, focussed on each other and very, very happy.
Some of the images taken during this time are featured in Dori’s blog – click here to have a look
As the party got going and the night grew dark, the Hyatt took on a different feel – no longer were the images about natural lighting and lots of glass windows. Now it was all about reflections and artificial lighting. I love this time of a wedding for photography. Artificial lighting just makes everything so different. And of course, it’s challenging getting these images – and there’s nothing quite like a challenge to get me going.
These are two of my favourites from the night shots. There are more but you’ll have to get Nico and Karin to show them to you when they get their album.
We will be posting more images from the wedding around the end of December on our website (photos4africa). Keep checking the featured wedding section of the website to see these images. Or become a fan of photos4africa on facebook. Keep in touch.
